Vologda merchants and the Crimean war: on the specifics of charitable activities in 1853 - 1856

The paper, based on the materials of the Vologda Provincial Gazette, provides a comprehensive analysis of the charitable activities of the Vologda merchants in the period 1853 - 1856, indicating its speci cs dictated by the events of the Crimean War. In particular, such forms of charity as monetary donations in favor of the army; the manufacture of lint by members of merchant families; assistance in organizing recruitment kits, and the formation of militia squads; provision of solemn meetings of war heroes are given. These forms of support for the active army were typical for other provinces of the Russian Empire, however, this issue is presented in studies very fragmentary, which makes the presented material relevant.
