Volunteers in the Israeli archives: preserving historical memory

The article presents practical experience of involving the volunteer community in the work of the archives of Israel. The state of the archival volunteering sphere, the functionality of the volunteer activists, areas of activity and types of work performed in archival institutions are considered. Volunteers perform a wide range of tasks: they digitize copies of archival documents and bibliographic materials, compile archival reference books and databases, search for documents at the request of public organizations, etc. A signi cant place in the study is occupied by the consideration of cultural, educational and historical memorial volunteer projects of archival institutions of Israel to preserve and protect the historical memory of the tragic events and victims of concentration camps, which became symbols of the most brutal crimes of World War II, the death of millions of European Jews. The author cites speci c activities of archival institutions of Israel to preserve historical memory with the participation of volunteers.
