Opportunities and prospects in the field of municipal solid waste management in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation

The article is devoted to the study of the possibilities and prospects of solid municipal waste (MSW) management, including polymer waste, in relation to the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. The features of climatic conditions, infrastructure and legislation affecting the processes of waste collection, transportation, processing and disposal are considered. The study analyzed data on the formation, processing, disposal, neutralization, and disposal of industrial and consumer waste in 10 subjects of the Russian Federation that are part of the Arctic zone. Based on the results of the study, a forecast was made for the development of MSW management until 2030, considering the commissioning of new waste treatment and disposal facilities in the Russian Arctic, and additional recommendations were formulated to improve the situation in MSW management, considering the specifics and conditions in the Arctic.
