The paper examines the historical prerequisites for the emergence of the “third place” concept proposed by R. Oldenburg in the late XX century and traces the development of his ideas in the scientific environment. The main points of this theory and its evolution in historiography are characterized. The emergence of the concept of “third place” marked the transition of human society to a new stage of its development - post-industrial, the cultural realities of which made an ordinary individual hostage to a technogenic civilization, deprived of the opportunity to choose the way to organize their free time. Analyzes the significance of urbanization in the processes of transformation of the socio-cultural situation. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in the comprehensive analysis of the concept of “third place” in historical retrospect. As a result of profound changes in cultural history due to the processes of urbanization, industrialization and suburbanization, it is noted that its emergence of the concept of “third place” was the result of profound transformations in the history of culture.
