The article, using the example of the monograph by the British historian Mary Beard «SPQR: The History of Ancient Rome» and a review of modern research devoted to the problems of the formation of collective identities of the Roman world (Pax Romana) and the post-Roman space, concludes that there is a significant heuristic potential for rethinking the political processes of the past based on the use of modern psychohistorical and identitarian socio-humanitarian concepts. Examples are presented of the studies devoted to the issues of transformation of socio-cultural values, formation of hierarchy and emergence of identity conflicts, clash of ideologies in the context of large-scale migration processes, geopolitical upheavals and the need to solve the problems of ensuring socio-political stability in imperial-type states, for understanding of which the Republican Rome and the Roman Empire for centuries have served as a model.
