The purpose of the study is to analyze the activities of the inventors and innovators movement operating in the motor transport sector of Abakan in the 1970s. The Soviet period of Russian history, despite its brevity, left a significant number of unique public institutions that require close attention from researchers. One of them is VOIR (All-Union Society of Inventors and Innovators), a unique phenomenon, an example of interaction between society and the state, accumulation of useful technical public initiatives in the interests of the country with material, technical, and legal support from the state. The methodological basis of the study was the theory of modernization, since its cognitive capabilities allow us to analyze the socio-cultural changes that took place in Soviet society along with the economic development of the country as a whole and its regions in particular. The principles of historicism, systematicity and objectivity, as well as general scientific and special scientific methods were used in the study. The chronological framework of the study is limited to the 1970s, the period of the most intensive industrial development of Khakassia, which gave rise to the intensification of the inventive and rationalization movement. The city's motor transport trust, consisting of several motor transport enterprises, was one of the most active participants in the movement, since technical problems that arose at enterprises were much easier to solve by local forces and means, while their solution through official authorities or according to official instructions was often delayed. Motor transport enterprises found technical solutions that allowed them to solve the problem on their own with the necessary quality and time savings. The source base was the materials of the National Archives of the Republic of Khakassia. The scale of the regional branch of VOIR, its quantitative and qualitative composition, as well as the results of the inventors' activities are shown.
