The article is devoted to the development of high-frequency trading. It is indicated that the variety of trading is a big issue for regulatory institutions, even in the most developed trade markets. The article author provides a list of common traits that characterize high-frequency trading, and it is concluded that it cannot be called a unified strategy. The difference between high-frequency and algorithmic trading is given. The article also provides an analysis of scientific approaches to the definition of high-frequency trading
