The article gives a brief description of the Akhaltsikhe region; considers the interaction between the population of the Akhaltsikhe region with the Turkic peoples from II to XII centuries; shows the pathways of Turkic tribes to the Caucasus and the reasons for their settlement in the territory of South Georgia. The paper presents different opinions on the origin of the term "Bunturk".
