The relationship of the quality of employment and the quality of work life: a review of research and the outlines of their development

The article provides a review of Russian and foreign publications, research results, ideas and discussions in the following areas related to the quality of employment, the quality of working life, the quality of work and other synonymous concepts: 1) definition and essence of the concept; 2) approaches and methods of evaluation; 3) assessment results; 4) comparison of approaches. The author analyzed, systematized and classified the definitions of the quality of employment, the quality of working life, the quality of work and the quality of the labor/working environment. Domestic and foreign approaches and methods to measuring the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of employment are analyzed and systematized in tabular form, index approaches are singled out separately. A comparison of different approaches and techniques is carried out, their limitations and advantages are formulated. The analysis carried out showed that there have not yet been developed uniform, generally accepted definitions of the quality of employment, the quality of working life; there is a terminological confusion of data and related concepts. The author's position is substantiated, which consists in the fact that the category "quality of working life" covers a wider area of social and labor relations in comparison with the category "quality of employment", integrating it and "quality of the working environment". Integral indicators are proposed to measure the quality of working life: 1) labor productivity, 2) labor efficiency,3) purchasing power of labor income,4) job satisfaction. Directions for further research into the categories "quality of employment" and "quality of working life" are outlined: the contours of specific areas of social and labor relations that characterize each of the considered categories and their relationship are outlined. Further research requires a clearer definition of the content of each of the considered categories and the identification of indicators for their measurement. The review presents extensive material for the continuation of analytical work and discussions, and will also allow finding solutions to topical theoretical and practical issues in one of the central areas of studying the quality and standard of living of our country's citizens.
