Transbaikal region - a geopolitical project of tsarist Russia

Foundation of Transbaikal Region first off was supposed to strengthen the frontier area as the base of Russian influence in Inner Asia. Changing rivals in the struggle for the region (European powers, China, Japan), the tsarist government was aware of the idea that the winner should have got a reliable transport infrastructure. Transsiberian railway construction was the most important and successful geopolitical step to achieve the goal. For final Russian establishment in the region further railways development and Transbaikal region economic strengthening were quite necessary, for these factors being the decisive argument in Russian positions establishment in Mongolia.
