In this article, the author considers the time associated with the invasions of Russian lands from the West and East in the 13th century, when the vector of the civilizational development of Rus divides into two directions. The personality and activity of Alexander Nevsky, the prince of the northeastern lands, who tried to make good relations with the Golden Horde to fight the crusaders, and Daniel Halytsky, the ruler of the south-western territories, deserve special attention during this period. In his turn, he tried to come to an agreement with Catholics to organize a crusade against the Mongols. Each prince, being caught at once from two directions, to some extent had concrete motives in choosing one side or another, and, undoubtedly, he sacrificed something for the realization of these goals. Which of them eventually proved to be right?
