The article discusses issues of the state, development and scientific support of sheep and goat breeding in Kyrgyzstan. There are real opportunities to increase the number of sheep and goats to 7.0 million heads in the near future with an average wool shearing for merino sheep in a physical weight of at least 3.5 kg. Over the past twenty years, the goat population in Kyrgyzstan has more than doubled and totals over 970 thousand heads. However, the number of pedigree goats is 20-30%. The rest is represented by local coarse-haired and low-productive crossbred animals, which are subject to further breed improvement.
