The novels of George Moore are famous for the new approach to the Victorian literature, but they are still closely connected with the literary tradition of the XIX century. The article is dedicated to the traditional and conventional in depicting of woman and woaman's life in "Esther Waters". The images and elements of the plot familiar to the reader from the novels by T.Hardy, E,Gaskell, Ch. Dickens are given the new forms and ideas, their task is to show the "real" and "truthful" story of XIX-XX century woman, but on the other hand, they are making the eternal image of the mother as a symbol of good in the world full of cruelty and unjustice.
