This article focuses on one of the most significant state and social institutions of pre-revolutionary Russia - the development of women's education in the periphery of the empire, specifically the Trans-Baikal region. The authors view the establishment of a system of women's educational institutions in the region as an objective and natural process influenced by both the democratization of socio-political life in the country and local socio-economic needs. The integration of women into the educational environment was accompanied by financial limitations, a significantly smaller range of subjects compared to male gymnasium education, and restrictive societal views on the “place of women” in the family and society. Despite these challenges, women's gymnasiums under the Ministry of Public Education, including those in the Trans-Baikal region, exemplify how educational institutions can foster social change and the evolution of societal values. This underscores the critical role of education in modernization processes and in integrating women into public life.
