The article considers the housing issue on the pages of periodical press in the 20s of the XX century. After coming of the Soviet Regime, the unresolved housing problems of the tsarist government only worsened. The objective and subjective reasons led to “housing starvation”. This problem was quite often covered by both central and local newspapers. The periodicals studied the causes of the housing famine, the role of the so-called “exes” in the housing situation of the 1920s, ways to solve the housing problem, housing conflicts, and also provided statistical data (the amount of free and occupied living space, the pace of housing construction, the construction budget, etc.). Housing evils such as fictitious marriages and relatives, giving bribes, illegal sale of square meters were ridiculed on the pages of satirical publications.
