The life of plague doctors and their contribution to the development of medieval medicine

The article is devoted to the history of the development of medicine in the late Middle Ages, focusing on one of the most significant events in the history of Western Europe - the second plague pandemic. The work presents not only possible natural foci of the disease, ways of its spread, but also the unique figure of the plague doctor. The study delves into the daily lives of doctors of that time, analyzes their working conditions, details of protective equipment and the methods of treatment used. An important place is occupied by the description of the public perception of representatives of this profession, emphasizing the complexity of their position in society. The article focuses on the importance of the experience and knowledge accumulated by plague doctors for the further development of medicine. Particular attention is given to successful cases of plague treatment and the profound impact of the pandemic on the social, economic, and cultural landscapes of Western European states.
