The article is devoted to the investigation of the Russian dialect phraseology in the Smolensk region. The linguistic material is taken from "Smolensk Ethnographic Collection" by V.N. Dobrovolsky and groups of proverbs and sayings about Life, Death are described. Linguistic means of the representation of the attitude of a Smolensk peasant of the 19th century to the philosophical categories of Life and Death are revealed.
