Claisen condensation of methyl ketones with diethyl oxalate in presence of sodium methylate results in 1,6-dialkyl-3,4-dihydroxy-2,4-hexadiene-1,6-diones. Seven tautomeric forms of synthesized compounds are found in solutions, ring-chain and ring-ring interconversions are discussed.
