The paper presents an analysis of the problems of freshmen students of technical higher schools, experiencing fairly serious difficulties in the study of higher mathematics. Consider ways to address the current situation, the techniques of stimulating cognitive activity of students. A special role in teaching - educational process is given to the organization of independent work of students. The authors of this article stop on the content side of this issue. It is proposed to consider the development of workbooks that contain tasks of varying complexity equipped with incremental algorithms. Working with notebooks forming a clear idea of the sequence of actions that are necessary to get the result. The article gives examples of tasks from different sections of higher mathematics. The aim of such teaching aids - to develop the skills of independent work, acquire and consolidate knowledge, to master the mathematical competence.
