Actualization of liminal mythologem in "Resurrection" novel by Leo Tolstoy

Бесплатный доступ

The article reviews the system of liminal mythologems in Leo Tolstoy's novel "Resurrection". The author identifies and conceptually describes a series of threshold elements of the novel's artistic world identified in such mythologems as a road, forest, river, water, fire, child, and old man. Their polyfunctionality and ambivalence, which generates the transitivity of internal and external states of objects and subjects of the Siberian chronotope, are manifested. The structural and substantial value of the mythologem of a river as an ideological dominant of the liminal situation, which characterizes the Siberian text as a whole, is particularly actualized. The "disorientation" of the main character of the novel within the boundaries of Turner's idea of liminality is emphasized. The author also shows conceptual significance of the threshold elements in the ideological and content plan of the novel, exposing the moralizing trend, aimed at asserting the need for moral selfimprovement as the only way to find the truth.
