The author of the article offers her own hypothesis about the significance of the plays written during the period of cooperation of A.N. Ostrovsky with N.Ya. Solovyov (“The Savage”, “Light Without Heat”) in the creative laboratory of the plays of A.P. Chekhov “Ivanov”, “The Wood Demon”, and separates, as two different, interaction levels along the Chekhov - Solovyov line and the interaction along the Chekhov -Ostrovsky line. This allows to distinguish the question of new social types presentation from the question of artistic effect level achieved by Chekhov. By establishing the nature of allusions, ways of creating plot parallels, motive similarities, features of borrowing and processing types, it is possible to catch, make available for analysis (disclosure and understanding) the nonverbal level of meanings where formalized structures and didactics do not interfere with the contemplative work of the mind. A comparative study of Chekhov’s dramas and source works containing typological parallels, confirmed by similarities in the character nomination (Boev - Borkin, Zaleshin - Leshy, etc.), is valuable for establishing the life and literary context and is necessary for revealing the immanent features of Chekhov’s innovative poetics.
