The study presents the findings of the sociological survey of the Stavropol Territory population conducted to identify the level of citizens activities to protect their rights and freedoms as well as to reveal the success of this type of civil behavior. The theoretical foundation of the research is the concept of civil society, in which the activity of the population and other social actors is a necessary prerequisite for an effective dialogue between different actors of civil society. The paper focuses on the fact that the study of the protection of rights and freedoms remains beyond the concerns of the modern sociologists. Based on the survey results, the authors classify the violated rights, reveal the intensive and progressive protection of the interests of the population. The research identifies that upholding the violated rights and freedoms is a quite successful process, but not all citizens are proactive to protect their interests. It determines the prospects for further development of civil relations in Russia.
