The author examines such concepts as linguistic culture, proper names, realia and gives an outline of their classification. The English and German realia fall into the following classes: tableware, drinks, food, shoes and clothes. The author refers to etymological data to get an idea of the realia closely related to the historical period of the country where they appeared. As a result, the author finds out that a great number of general cultural words formed from anthroponyms became part of everyday English and German. The article contributes to the development of English and German onomastics. The findings may be used in teaching the course on lexicology as well as in compiling bilingual dictionaries.
