Analysis of dietary stereotype in patients with urolithiasis

Introduction. Recently, the inexorable rise in the incidence of urolithiasis was recorded. Nowadays, detection of the causes of kidney stone formation and reduction in the number of recurring stones is possible with the help of chemical analysis of kidney stone composition and examination of biochemical parameters of blood and urine. It is also important to evaluate patient’s eating patterns as well. Interviewing of the group of interest using questionnaire surveys is one of the most effective and popular ways of eating patterns evaluation. Materials and methods. In order to study the interconnection between eating patterns and urolithiasis, an eating pattern prodram was developed by the researchers from Lopatkin Research Institute of Urology (Moscow). The questionnaire is freely Internet-accessible on the website www.nethealth.ru, in the “testing” section. The main part of the questionnaire contains questions related to consumption of products from a particular food group. All products are separated into subdivisions, according to the Trade Classification. Each group includes products, which are most commonly sold and consumed in Russia. After questioning, the system calculates daily intake of ingredients. Results. The consumption patterns of each ingredient are related to one kilogram of patient’s body mass; when the patient fills the “body mass” field, they are calculated instantly. The data obtained is compared to the average daily intake of those ingredients by the average person. In case of divergences from the norm for one or several parameters, a conclusion that the changes in eating patterns are present is made. Conclusion. The developed questionnaire for the evaluation of eating patterns is an effective method of determination of patient’s diet preferences. This is also an extra instrument for the correction of metabolic lithogenic disorders in patients with urolithiasis.
