The article examines the influence of the ideas of Seneca and Plutarch on Joseph de Maistre. Joseph de Mestre examines the reflections of Seneca and Plutarch on the governance of the universe and people in the perspective of the common human’s (universal) belief in Providence for all mankind. This topic is problematized because of the need to explain how injustice towards virtuous people is possible if it is assumed that there exists a moral structure of the universe and its maker and guarantor, God.
