The ancient ideals of leisure in the context of contemporary social and cultural practices

The article deals with the Ancient concept of leisure, which was an integral property of a citizen who had a high level of freedom, including from any labor, material and necessary occupations. On the material of Aristotle’s “Politics” the classical ideal of leisure is revealed, which acts as an independent, highest form of free existence of man. It is emphasized that leisure has an activity character and acts as a defining beginning for all in human activity. The classical ideal of leisure is dominated by virtuous character, bliss and pleasure, a deep connection with art. From the perspective of the theory of social and cultural activity, the conclusion is emphasized that for the ability to use leisure time in life, you need to learn something, because it displays the value of additional education, social and cultural education on the same level with general practices that solve important problems of personal development.
