Using the methods of statistical and content analysis, the article characterizes the development of ancient images in the poems published by the journal Notes of the Fatherland (Otechestvennye zapiski) under the editorship of N. A. Nekrasov. The novelty and relevance of the study are due to a complete and systematic description of the role and place of ancient images in the poems that were published in this social and publicistic journal during the period of activity of one particular editor. Poetic works constituted a relatively small part of the journal’s publications, but had a significant influence on the development of its program. Antique images are present in both original and translated poems, mainly of a satirical nature, which corresponds to its range of themes and subjects. With the help of ancient images, the authors paint a picture of reality, responding to the most significant social problems. This functioning of ancient images continues the traditions of the satire of classicism. However, ancient images also appear in poems with philosophical, historical and cultural reflections or descriptions of the fullness and joy of human life, originating in the Anacreontic tradition.
