Anthropocentrism, Focusedness and Implicitness: Features of Deep Metaphor in the Works of V. Tokareva

This article investigates the deep metaphor as a constructive component of literary texts from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Based on the proposed concept that understands a deep metaphor as a cognitive phenomenon rooted in archetypal perceptions, implicitly presented in the text and fulfilling a compositional function, the study analyzes its key characteristics in the works of Victoria Tokareva. The aim of the article is to identify and systematically describe three interrelated features that define the specificity of deep metaphors in Tokareva’s prose: anthropocentrism, focalization, and implicitness. Anthropocentrism manifests as the dominant thematic focus: deep metaphors are concentrated on the inner world of the “ordinary person”, their existential problems, conflicts with the social environment, and search for self-realization in everyday life. This transforms metaphor into a tool for psychological and social inquiry. Focalization is a key formal-semantic property. Scattered images, motifs, and plot developments are organized around a single semantic center – a foundational deep metaphor. This metaphor performs a constructive function, ensuring the thematic unity, coherence, and integrity of the text, thereby serving as its semantic core. Implicitness defines the mode of realization for deep metaphors. They are rarely verbalized directly but are “dissolved” in the narrative, emerging through the system of characters, their relationships, everyday details, and plot conflicts. This hidden nature requires active interpretative engagement from the reader for their recognition and the achievement of an adequate understanding of the work. Thus, the article demonstrates that anthropocentrism, focalization, and implicitness form a system of characteristics that adapt the general cognitive mechanism of metaphorization to the individual authorial style of V. Tokareva and shape the distinctive figurative-semantic structure of her literary texts. The results confirm the heuristic potential of the proposed approach to analyzing the deep metaphor as the semantic core of a literary work.
