This article analyzes the importance of using archaisms in Russian and English literature, distinguishing between the concepts of «historicism», «archaism» and «notiolism». The main factors leading to the emergence of historicisms and archaisms and the scope of their use are revealed. The language is constantly evolving, borrowing new vocabulary, displacing old, obsolete lexemes. Archaisms are words that reflect the reality and way of life of the described time. They give a unique style and flavor to the literary work, highlighting a specific historical period. Such words are characterized by the ability to reflect objects that have no equivalents when translated from one language to another.
