Asceticism as a part of mystical theology: historical aspect

The article examines the origin and theological understanding of the phenomenon of Orthodox asceticism. Exploring the characteristics of ascetic practices, the author constantly refers to the important topic of mystical justification of asceticism: going up against passions and smart prayer are valuable not so much by themselves, but rather as an initial step towards the knowledge of God and unity with God.
