Autographs of scribes-calligraphersfrom the cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorod (end of the 11th - early 12th centuries)

The paper deals with an important issue related to writing, copyingand illuminating of manuscripts in Novgorod. It examines inscriptions / graffiti anddrawings made by professional scribes from the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorodand the earliest known manuscript of the Menaion for the month of November thatoriginated in the Novgorod scriptorium. The new interpretation of one of the manuscriptmarginalia and the comparison of the name and the handwriting with the autographs/graffiti left by the scribes from the Cathedral of St. Sophia provided an opportunity toobtain documentary evidence of the Cathedral of St. Sophia participation in establishmentof the earliest local scriptorium and add professional scribes from the Cathedral clergy tothe roll of scriveners.
