Sayansky ostrog, built in 1718 – the first Russian fortress in Siberia, fully excavated. The result is a large amount of archaeological materials. They allow you to set the layout of the fortress, including the exact location, size and design features of the towers. According to written sources, the towers were 5 – four in the corners of the fortress and one of the door (driving tower). Archaeological research has confirmed this information. All angular towers preserved adequately at their lower parts. They were the same type of wooden structures measuring 6 by 6 meters, chopped pine logs. Located in the shaft. It towers flanked the defensive wall and extension of economic purpose, also made of wood. Inside corner towers were wooden floors and standing stove. Messages written sources and the nature of the cultural layer inside these towers (fragments of pottery, animal bones, and household items) suggest that they were used for living garrison. Driving tower located on the south side. Survived worse than others. However, the available details and analogies can be established that tower also had a size 6 by 6. All towers with their outer walls lie on a straight line and barely protrudes from the defensive walls. This distinguishes Sayan castle from other Russian fort, where the towers were essentially out for flanking fire on enemy attackers. Obtained during its study results can be used for reconstruction of planning and development, the establishment of specific use towers in other Russian fortresses XVIII century.
