The bestiary of the Kalmyk fable of the twentieth century, as it turns out, is characterized by a host of recognizable animals (wolf, fox, hare, bear, camel, turtle, etc.), birds (eagle, swallow, crane, stork, geese, etc.), fish (catfish, pike, ruff, etc.), insects (worm, fly, ant, etc.), various reptiles (snake, frog, etc.) or pets (bull, cow, sheep, goat, horse, rooster, chickens, dog, cat, etc.). Dearth of research in that regard determines the relevance of studying the bestial images. The subject of this study (based on the examples of selected works by S. Kalyaev, M. Khoninov, P. Darvaev, B. Jimbinov) involves, firstly, rare bestial material (mole, lynx, donkey), and, secondly, apologue as a short form of the animalistic fable of Kalmyk authors. The purpose of the article was to identify new heroes and conflicts, the form and content of an apologue, didactic formulas, author’s intentions. As a result, in historical and literary perspective, the features of the allegorical poetics of fable and apologue by Kalmyk poets are considered, general and various strategies and tactics are revealed in the comparative aspect of the fables about the mole by S. Kalyaev and Aesop, I. Dmitriev, V. Zhukovsky, G. Chimitov, the fables about the dog and fox by B. Jimbinov and Aesop, Lafontaine, I. Krylov, A. Sumarokov, F. Krivin. The Russian translation of the works of the Kalmyk fabulists showed, on the one hand, proximity to the original, on the other - the introduction of new details and semantic accents of the ultimate morality in the assessment of gossip, stupidity, imposture, unjust judgment.
