The article examines the main elements of the theology of history of St. Seraphim (Sobolev, 1881–1950), in particular, his teaching on the main factor of the historical process, which is the religious consciousness of the people; on the causes of the Russian Turmoil of the twentieth century; on the essence of tsarist power as based on the teachings of the Holy Church, on the principles of the revival of future Russia and on socialism as a God-fighting doctrine. The teaching of St. Seraphim is an authentic reflection of the Orthodox national consciousness and understanding of history, and this is its importance not only as part of church teaching, but also as a valuable historical source. As a historical source, the works of St. Seraphim allows us to understand the mentality of the Orthodox people and their understanding of historical events.
