The article of A. Yu. Mitrofanov is devoted to the development of S. S. Avernitsev’s thesis about the cultural universalism of Constantinople and offers a study of the relations of the states, which appeared on the ruins of Byzantium after 1204 with the Mongol conquerors. A. Yu. Mitrofanov concludes that Batu’s defeat of the troops of the Latin Emperor Baldwin II de Courtenay in 1242 predetermined not only the strengthening of the Nicene Empire, but also the subsequent allied relations of the Nicene and Trebizond Emperors with the Mongols. This circumstance influenced the victory of the Nicene Empire in the struggle for the Komnenian inheritance.
