Sambian-Natangian bracelets with broadened ends from the 4th-5th centuries

Бесплатный доступ

Bronze bracelets with broadened ends attributed to the Sambian-Natangian culture are the earliest examples of such items in the Baltics region and the western part of the East European Plain. As shown by the data from the burial assemblages, they appeared as part of decorative accessories used by the local population in the second half of the 3rd - early 4th centuries. The latest items are dated to the second half of the th century. The bracelets represent imitations of prestigious jewelry decorated with precious stones characteristic of the Germanic elites of the Late Roman period and the beginnings of the Migration period. However, in contrast to their prototypes, these bracelets were ordinary jewelry pieces that people wore to identify themselves with the culture of the North European communities.
