To continue the analysis presented earlier in the article “Theological Modernism as Attempted Christian Reception of Capitalism” in which one of the urgent problems of modern Christian society was posed, this article suggests considering this issue in the context of direct and reverse mutual influence of today’s rapidly secularizing world and the Church. The main premise is to give a scientific definition of the “modernism” concept proper which has penetrated into almost all spheres of church life (from theology to liturgical practice) — no matter if modernism is a narrow internal church problem (one of the variations of a set of classical and/or “neoclassical” heresies) or a systemic phenomenon with deep social roots and associated with the peculiarities and deformations of the development of modern society in the context of secular globalization. A new perception of the social prerequisites of institutional modernism is proposed as a scientific hypothesis for further study of the issue.
