What do MGIMO students imply understanding the text?

In this article the author considers the issue of teaching the text from a synergistic point of view, as a connection between the teacher and the student, in which the latent potentials are revealed in students themselves, attitudes towards promising tendencies of their own development, which are revealed in the process of analytical activity of a receptive type of activity. We conducted a survey among MGIMO second and third year students of international relations regarding what they mean by the concept of a text, its interpretation, and the main stages of working with the text. The study showed that in order to combine words into phrases and sentences, it is necessary to keep them in RAM until the understanding of a common syntagma or sentence, i.e. translating them into a “code of meaning”. This process also requires the reader to be active. In addition, understanding the text provides a spiritual enrichment for the student. Understanding of the text becomes part of the recipient's individual cognitive space, i.e. when reading and interpreting literary texts containing socio-cultural information, students accumulate it, which gradually leads to the emergence of a common knowledge with native speakers, the development of the linguo-cognitive level of the secondary linguistic personality and spiritual enrichment. 33% of the students of our faculty try to anticipate future events, i.e. use the phenomenon of anticipation, because comprehension of the topic of the text is a creative moment in the process of comprehending information and it requires guesswork, which is possible only when restructuring existing semantic connections and closing them in the act of understanding. The study leads us to the conclusion that students also enjoy working on linguistic commentary, because understanding the text requires “asking for commentary” too. He individualizes the meaning of the utterance, which, outside the context, has only an abstract, universal meaning, complements the meaning of the utterance with the help of nuances, adapting the word to a certain subject field.
