The 20th century brought a significant number of new ideas and aspects to the study of color, namely the formation of its own methods and approaches to the study of color in every branch of knowledge. The color began to be considered as a sign, or a symbol that is capable of conveying additional meanings, in addition to the traditional name of the color. It is noted that ‟color has turned from a means of representation into a means of expression”. The relevance of the study is due to the importance of the functional purpose of color lexemes in a literary text, which are an expression of the philosophical and ideological concept of the author. The object of the work is the expression of the color of the selected work, its normative and individual author's use in the text. The purpose of this article is to analyze the means and forms of formation of the color picture of the world in the Clean Monday by I. A. Bunin story, using such theories as: the theory of functional styles, the theory of discourse, the theory of grammar constructions. Tasks: to determine color concepts that express the individual speech experience of the writer; to establish the interaction of grammatical, semantic principles in the functioning of certain color lexemes. Results: the color image is represented by lexemes white, gray, blue, crimson, pink, pomegranate and some others (about 20 words in total). It has been established that the choice of lexemes and phrases is determined by the context and is subject to the author's intention. Conclusions: color lexemes can have different meanings: nominative, evaluative and symbolic. In a literary text, as a rule, all meanings are realized. Depending on the syntagmatics, some color lexemes perform a purely nominative function, while others are polyfunctional due to the inclusion of an evaluative seme. The symbolic meaning may take precedence over other meanings.
