Дебаты об ответственности писателя как во Франции, так и в США были атакой на литературный и художественный модернизм. Реакция на модернизм от Шарля Морраса до Ирвинга Бэббита позиционировала себя как защита классицизма и традиции против романтизма. Далекая от того, чтобы быть политически нейтральной, эта атака была связана с идентификацией романтизма с революцией и разрушением социального порядка. Оппозиция ответственности и свободы структурировала дебаты с конца XIX в. до Второй мировой войны. Война повлекла за собой потерю автономии литературного поля, что способствовало, как и во время Первой мировой войны, распространению национального морализма. В обеих странах дебаты возникли вокруг вопроса об ответственности писателя, но приняли разные формы. В то время как оппозиция искусства для искусства и ответственности продолжала структурировать дискуссию в США, во Франции понятие ответственности было присвоено литературным Сопротивлением и переопределено Сартром в ходе Освобождения.
