Activities of the Medical and Sanitary Department of the American Relief Administration in Samara Province (1921-1923)

The article is devoted to the activities of the ARA medical and sanitary department in the Samara province during the famine of 1921-1922. The author examines the specific assistance measures carried out by the ARA to support the regional health care system, including the activities of American doctors and medical and sanitary departments, the supply of medicines, the implementation of vaccination campaigns, the fight against social diseases, as well as the procedures for interaction between the ARA department and the Soviet government. She concluded that ARA assistance had made a significant contribution to the fight against hunger. Thanks to the work of the ARA medical and sanitary department and its head, Dr. F. Foucar, all medical institutions in the Samara province were able to function properly during the famine and saved thousands of people who were doomed to die.
