The article points up the issues of forming and diagnosing «normative» structure of students' knowledge. The knowledge corresponding to the requirements of the State Educational Standard that is to be mandatory acquired by students and consequently controlled by education institutions is regarded to be «normative». On the basis of conducted research it is stated that the most objective way of diagnosing the formed structure of knowledge is a test.
