The level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) was studied in 2279 patients. The PSA level elevated over 4 ng/ml was the indication for transrectal needle biopsy of the prostate. Cytological examination was carried out for 194 (8,5 %) patients. Prostate cancer was detected in 145 (74,7 %) patients, benign hyperplasia of the prostate was diagnosed in 49 (25,3 %) cases. Prostate cancer was histologically proven to be adenocarcinoma. Tumor cell ploidy was studied for 23 prostate cancer patients.
