The article describes the evolution of the Balanced scorecard (BSC) as one of the world’s most popular systems of measuring performance. The BSC, developed by Robert Kaplan and David Norton as a strategic management tool, has been constantly changing with the accumulation of practical experience of its use. The author of the article establishes the chronology of the publication of articles and books that have become milestones on the way of development of the BSC and traces of system changes during last 20 years. Based on the analysis of practice of application of the BSC, the author concludes that this system is a tool for both strategic and operational management, and the system is becoming increasingly common. Also as a result of research the author concludes that the dynamics of the system changes aimed at increasing practical tools in its composition.
