Введение. Специальных работ о дипломатической деятельности английского поэта Мэттью Прайора в исторической литературе единицы, а в отечественной историографии она не получила оценки. Методы и материалы. При исследовании дипломатической службы поэта были использованы системный и антропологический методы, контент-анализ его корреспонденции, биографий и исследовательских работ. Анализ. Прайор являлся одним из немногих англичан своего времени, способных совмещать политическую и поэтическую карьеру. Он соответствовал главным критериям восхождения по карьерной лестнице в эпоху «дворов и альянсов», обладая профессиональными способностями, отличным знанием языков, остроумием и умением хорошо писать. Как дипломат Прайор эффективно проявил себя во время двух европейских войн - войны Аугсбургской лиги и войны за Испанское наследство. В качестве секретного агента, секретаря посольства и чрезвычайного посла Прайор занимал видное место на всех переговорах с Францией.
