The peer-reviewed book is a collection of essays on the problems of the history of the Old Believers and religious sectarianism in the Astrakhan province. The author of the book succeeded in finding stories that are not reflected in regional historiography and concerning the activities of Orthodox missionaries among religious dissidents, the family and household side of life of the Old Believers and specific elements of the culture of representatives of this religious denomination. The extensive and detailed sketch reflects the milestones of the history of the Christ-believers (Khlysts) in the Astrakhan land. Great attention was paid to the role of the individual in the matter of religious service. Author of the book shows the complexity and tragedy of the situation of people who, while remaining Russians in their ethnicity, nevertheless were strangers in a religious sense for most of their compatriots who shared the dogmas of the ruling church.
