Статья пытается оценить, в какой степени наши знания об истории античной географии (понимаемой как список авторов, внёсших в неё вклад) обусловлены дошедшими источниками, и, если ввести поправку на их неполноту и избирательность, насколько иной могла бы представиться эта история. В итоге, анализ корпуса источников и ссылок на авторов утраченных сочинений дают разные ответы. Анализ источников показывает, что наши знания об античной географии в значительной мере обусловлены случайностями и поэтому должны заметно отличаться от того, какой она могла видеться в древности. Анализ ссылок показывает, напротив, что нам известна большая часть географов, которые пользовались известностью в античности. Отчасти это расхождение можно объяснить склонностью источников цитировать наиболее известных авторов, а не тех, чьи сведения реально использовались. Сравнение историографических списков географов в разных источниках выявляет между ними больше расхождений, чем сходств, и показывает, что версию наших опорных источников (Эратосфен, Страбон, Стефан Византийский) остальные, скорее, не поддерживают. Однако наблюдается закономерность: наиболее значимые источники склонны опираться на наиболее известных авторов. Своего рода «стресс-тест» позволяет оценить, насколько наши знания о наиболее значимых географах чувствительны к утрате отдельных источников, и, наоборот, сколько ещё географов могли бы войти в их круг, если бы им более повезло с источниками. Общий вывод: изменения в составе корпуса источников легко изменили бы и наши оценки большинства географов, но едва ли смогли бы заметно изменить их общее число. Показывается также, что период истории географии от Страбона до Птолемея лежит для нас в «слепой зоне», освещенной источниками хуже всего, но, по ряду признаков, скрывающей некие недостающие звенья.
