In the article jazz music in general and jazz improvisation in particular are investigated as manifestations of the aesthetic dialectic of the beautiful and the ugly. Jazz sounds “imperfect” for the hearing brought up on classical European harmony, and this imperfection, this un obvious beauty is analyzed through the prism of the fundamental aesthetic idea of form and formlessness. In addition the author considers the permanent Dionysian context of jazz, associated with its folklore roots of a complex Afro-European genesis. Author concludes that jazz “imperfection” of harmony, rhythm and melody is not a random manifestation of the ugly due to lack of technique, but an essential aesthetic feature of jazz. The openness of the jazz artistic text supports the idea that the dialogical proportion of the beautiful and the ugly should be the central point of focus of analysis of jazz through the prism of a modern aesthetic system.
