Статья посвящена рассмотрению личности Джона Баннистера – обер-мастера Придворного экипажного заведения с точки зрения его авантюристичности или гениальности. Проведен анализ материалов Российского государственного исторического архива в части фондов, касающихся Придворного экипажного заведения, для составления общей картины деятельности этого важного учреждения, занимающегося строительством, ремонтом, эксплуатацией различных видов экипажей, предназначенных для поездок императора, членов его семьи и высокопоставленных чиновников. Исследование базируется на изучении и сопоставлении различного рода архивных материалов, таких как служебные и личные письма, штатное расписание Придворного экипажного заведения, отчеты о выполненных работах. В методологическом плане применялась совокупность общенаучных и специально-исторических методов, таких как анализ-синтез, логический, системный методы. Результаты анализа архивных материалов позволяют глубже изучить историю транспортного развития нашей страны в XIX в., более полно осмыслить сложность процессов, происходящих в транспортной отрасли, выявить проблемы и препятствия, стоящие на пути их реализации. Материалы статьи могут послужить основой для подготовки аналитических сообщений, учебных пособий и специальных курсов по истории России.

John Bannister – Chief Master of the Imperial Court Carriage Office: An Adventurer or a Genius
The article examines the personality of John Bannister, Chief Master of the Court Carriage Office, from the perspective of whether he was an adventurer or a genius. Documents from the Russian State Historical Archive relating to the Court Carriage Office are analyzed in order to give an overall picture of the activities of this important institution, which was responsible for the construction, repair, and operation of various types of carriages intended for the journeys of the Emperor, members of the imperial family, and high-ranking officials. The study is based on the examination and comparison of various kinds of archival records, such as official and personal letters, the staffing schedule of the Court Carriage Office, and reports on completed work. The study employs a combination of general scientific and historical methods, including analysis-synthesis, logical, and systemic approaches. The results of this archival analysis allow for obtaining a deeper knowledge of the history of transportation development in Russia in the 19th century, for gaining a better understanding of the complexity of processes taking place in the transport sector, and for identifying the issues and obstacles hindering their implementation. The findings of the study may serve as a foundation for the preparation of analytical reports, textbooks, and special courses on the history of Russia.
