The article attempts to analyze the phenomenon of “modernization” in the field of Russian orthodox musical culture. The author raises the problem of understanding the essential and semantic foundations of the church art in the way of latest trends of Russian culture. Attraction to the spiritual culture through the massization of spiritual genres in the external activities of the Church and “remakes” in the sphere of church song-making provoke a denial of the spirituality of the national character. The author sees certain prerequisites for the spread of this phenomenon in the influence of the aesthetics of postmodernism and the ongoing processes of secularization of spiritual culture. Nevertheless, various attempts of the modern author’s reading demonstrate a positive side in the development of spiritual art: this is the ever-increasing need of the modern artist for a dialogue with the culture of the past, the desire to comprehend its philosophical and ideological heritage contained in the samples and genres of Russian church songwriting.
